Improving Speed in the Newshosting Newsreader
The Newshosting Newsreader is optimized for high-speed access across our Tier-1 Usenet backbone, but performance can vary depending on a few local factors. This article outlines practical steps to help improve your connection speed when using the Newsreader.
Verify Maximum Connection Settings
To achieve optimal throughput, open the Newsreader settings and confirm the number of connections is set according to your subscription level. Newshosting supports up to 100 SSL-secured connections, but using too many on a slower system or network may reduce performance. Try lowering the connection count in increments of 10 to find a more efficient setting. You can control your connection number in Options > Settings > Connection and check the "Use customized number of connections (if applicable)" box and choose your number of connections in the field below.
Check for ISP Speed Limitations
Some Internet service providers apply throttling or network shaping to specific traffic types. Running a general Internet speed test will show your baseline speed, but performance within the Newsreader may differ. If the Newsreader speed is significantly lower, consider testing during off-peak hours or switching to a different port in the settings (SSL ports 563 or 443 are available).
Test Alternate Server Locations
Newshosting operates multiple server farms in North America and Europe. The Newsreader will automatically choose the best server based on your location, but manually switching between server hostnames (such as switching from news.newshosting.com
to a specific regional endpoint) may yield better results in some cases.
Use a Wired Connection When Possible
Wi-Fi networks are convenient, but physical Ethernet connections are typically more stable and faster. If you're seeing inconsistent speeds or interruptions, switching to a wired connection can reduce interference and packet loss.
Avoid Concurrent Bandwidth Usage
If other devices or programs are actively using your connection, your available bandwidth for Usenet traffic may be reduced. Pause any Internet-intensive activity—such as video streaming or large software updates—while using the Newsreader to improve performance.
Restart Your Modem and Router
Basic as it may sound, power cycling your networking equipment can resolve temporary connection issues or ISP routing problems. Disconnect the power for both your modem and router, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect and allow them to reboot.
