Why Did I Receive a 10061 'Connection Refused' Error?

A 10061 error means your connection to the Newshosting server was refused. This typically happens when the server is rejecting requests on a given port or is unreachable due to local or network-related interference. Here's how to investigate and resolve the issue.

Check Your Server Settings

First, make sure your newsreader is configured to use the correct server address and port:

  • Server address: news.newshosting.com

  • SSL ports: 563, 443

  • Non-SSL ports: 119, 23, 80, 2000, 8000, 8080

Using the wrong server address or an incorrect port can trigger a 10061 error.

Try a Different Port

If the port you're using is blocked by your ISP, network, or firewall, the connection will be refused. Switch to another SSL or non-SSL port from the list above and try again. Many ISPs block common Usenet ports, especially on public Wi-Fi or corporate networks.

Test Your Internet Connection

A temporary Internet outage or DNS failure could result in a 10061 error. Restart your modem/router, and test other Internet services to confirm that your connection is stable.

Disable VPN or Security Software Temporarily

Some VPNs or antivirus tools may interfere with newsreader connections. Temporarily disable them to see if the connection succeeds. If this resolves the issue, consider adding an exception for your newsreader in your security software settings.
