What to Do When a Repair Fails in Your Newsreader

Understanding the Repair Error Message

The message "repair failed, not enough repair blocks" typically appears when a Usenet post cannot be fully restored. This is often related to how the post was uploaded or retrieved.

Common Causes of Repair Failure

  • Post Too Old for Article Retention If a post is older than Newshosting's article retention period, it may no longer be accessible. This can result in missing data and a failed repair.
  • Partial Post Removal Some articles may have been removed from the Usenet servers. This could be due to takedown requests or incomplete propagation, which leads to missing parts.
  • Insufficient Repair Blocks Posts typically include repair data in the form of PAR2s. If there are too few blocks, the newsreader can't fix damaged or missing segments.
  • NZB Missing PAR2 References If your NZB was created without referencing PAR2s, your newsreader will lack the necessary data to make repairs.
  • Naming Convention Issues Unusual naming structures can confuse some newsreaders. They may fail to associate the PAR2s with the correct archive segments.

Steps to Try

  • Add another Usenet server to fill in gaps

  • Search for a duplicate post with better completion or repair data
