Move Newsbin Settings to Another Computer
Transferring your Newsbin setup to another system is straightforward thanks to the way the software stores data. Here’s how to replicate your environment on a different machine:
-
Install Newsbin: On your new computer, install and register Newsbin. The standard license supports up to three installations.
-
Copy the Data Folder: Go to Options > Setup in your original installation and locate the DATA folder path. Copy the entire folder to your new system to maintain your Usenet work environment.
-
Transfer the Layout File: Move the Guiitems.db3 file from the original system to
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\newsbin
on the new system to replicate your window and tab arrangement. -
Include the Configuration File: Locate the .NBI configuration file from your previous setup. Double-clicking this file on the new machine prompts Newsbin to use the saved settings, including servers, subscribed groups, and preferences.
-
Changing the Newsbin Data Folder location: The Newsbin Data folder is where Newsbin stores all its working files and databases.
Upon installation, the Data Folder is placed in the user's Local Appdata folder. There are times when users want to move the Newsbin Data folder to another location, typically to another drive on the same computer. This could be for a number of reasons, such as running out of space or dealing with permissions issues after upgrading Windows.
The steps to do this are:
-
Identify the location of your configuration file. This appears in the title bar of the Newsbin window. If unsure, use the "Save Configuration As" option under the File menu.
-
Find your current Data folder location using the "Open Data Folder" button under Options > Setup.
-
Exit Newsbin.
-
Open the configuration (.NBI) file with a text editor such as Notepad. Make a backup first.
-
Under the [Settings] section, find the
DataPath
variable and update it to the new location. -
Move all files from the old Data folder to the new path.
-
Double-click the .NBI file to launch Newsbin with the updated configuration.
-
-
Start with the Correct Configuration: Launch Newsbin by double-clicking the copied .NBI file. After the first launch, Newsbin will continue using this configuration by default.
Note: Previously queued items retain their original paths. To move them, right-click each entry and choose "Download to Folder."
