Getting Started with Newsbin Pro
Newsbin Pro is a powerful newsreader used to connect to Usenet newsgroups. This guide walks through the initial setup process with Newshosting, including connecting to servers, setting Internet usage preferences, and integrating an Indexer.
Step 1: Launching Newsbin Pro
When launching Newsbin Pro for the first time, the configuration wizard will appear. Follow the on-screen steps to begin.
Step 2: Add Newshosting Server Info
-
Go to Options > Servers.
-
Click New Server.
-
Enter your Newshosting username and password.
-
Set server address to:
news.newshosting.com
-
Use port 563 for SSL or 119 for non-SSL.
-
Assign a unique server name like "Newshosting"
For more details, look at our Newsbin Pro installation guide.
Step 3: Internet Bandwidth Settings
Configure bandwidth preferences to control Internet usage:
-
Set speed limits, if needed. These can be set in Options > Settings > Network
-
Choose off-peak scheduling if desired.
Step 4: Set Article Retention Filters
To benefit from Newshosting's full article retention, check your filter settings:
-
Go to Options > Servers
-
Choose your Usenet server and click the Really Advanced button.
-
Check the box next to "Use Typical Retention" and set the number to the oldest article you would like.
-
Since Newshosting has spooling retention, we do not recommend setting this feature because the article retention number will increase every day.
Step 5: Set a Save Path
- Choose a local folder where your articles will be stored. These can be set in Options > Settings > Setup.
Final Tip
Regularly update your Newsbin Pro application to maintain smooth access.
